Google Reveals Site Ranking Secret

Tuesday, September 22, 2009
OK - so maybe that's not quite correct - but it got your attention I hope!

The truth is that Google's "Site Ranking Secret" - better known as their Ranking Algorithm - is just that, a closely guarded secret.

However - I have some news for those of you putting together a web site for your business. It's yet another reason why you might reconsider using your son/cousin/friend/neighbor (oops a little to close there...).

Google doesn't use the Keywords Meta Tag for Ranking Sites.

Some of you may not be as familiar with that term - but you may have heard that if you put keywords in the background code of your site, it helps you be #1 on Google. Well it's simply not true.

Google is constantly changing their Ranking Algorithm - and if you want your site to show up in the all the Search Engines (not just Google) - you need to invest in a Search Engine Optimization Program. Not just a one-shot activity, but an ongoing, strategic plan to get your business noticed online.

It's a necessity for your business to attract new customers. It's an investment that you can't afford to ignore. It's the difference between success and failure.

Clickthrough Rates - Bing Versus Google

Monday, July 27, 2009
Being the web nerd that I am, I was looking over the latest headlines over at Slashdot.com.

They had a great article that at first seemed like BIG news - Bing has a clickthrough rate this is 55% Higher than Google! Wow, could this be true?

On further study, however, there were many exceptions to this seemingly revolutionary statement.

First, Bing has been spending boatloads of money promoting itself. What's going to happen to their traffic after the shine has worn off this new penny?

Secondly, what types of searchers are going to Bing? "... could it just be that they've reaped the low hanging fruit of those who are particularly pursuaded by advertising?" I think that is a real possibility.

Slashdot.com's comment area after the article features yet another very significant point - Google still gets your ad about 13 TIMES as many impressions.

As we tell our clients, it's important to write a well-crafted ad campaign, because while everyone may not click on your ad, you can gain alot of brand recognition when you advertise online.

Just a few thoughts to ponder on a sultry summer day. Hope you're enjoying your summer, and most importantly your friends and family.

How Does the Internet Impact Your Business?

Sunday, April 12, 2009

Now that all the Easter festivities are over, I took time to listen to a podcast by one of the co-founders of Reach Local, Nathan Hanks. Many thanks to my fellow Internet Consultant, Darren Kincaid, for organizing the call.

One of the key points Nathan made in his talk was the three most imporant aspects to a company's online presence:

  • Awareness
  • Consideration
  • Purchase

We have solutions that address each of these aspects, that I'm going to quickly summarize.

  • Online Display Advertising - making consumers aware of your product.
  • Use of Web 2.0 and New Media - when consumers are considering your product and service, what is the online conversation about your company?
  • Online Search - when consumers are ready to purchase, they use the search engines as an online yellow pages to find the products they need.

That's where our menu of services comes into play: Search Engine Optimization, Pay Per Click, Social Media Advertising, Email Marketing, and much more. The question is - do you know how to make all these services work for your business?

When you are making your plans to advertise next quarter, are you taking all these issues under consideration? Call me today and let's make sure that you are maximizing your online return on investment.

Businesses are Looking for Bloggers

Sunday, March 15, 2009

Here's a great way to increase traffic to your business - start a blog.

Sounds easy, right? If you love to write and more importantly if you have time to write, then creating a blog is not all that intimidating.

But what if you see the value of writing a blog but you don't have the time? That's where having a trusted internet marketing consultant comes in handy.

====

One more quick tip about blogs - there are three general types of blogs

- A blog about ME (diary, press release)
- A blog about US (industry news)
- A blog about YOU (tips and tricks)

Which type of blog are you going to write? Unless you are Apple Computer or Google, you might want to consider the last two if you really want to drive traffic to your business.

So today as I pulled up to my laptop, coffee in hand, I found a great new nugget of information that intrigued me - Canonical URL.
Please check out this fantastic article from the SEOmoz web site with more details. I especially like the way Rand Fishkin used pictures to explain the concept.

If all this is more information than you can take in, never fear, that's what we are here for!

Hope you find yourself enjoying this fine February - talk to you soon.

The Power of Social Media - Part One

Sunday, January 25, 2009
I've been telling my clients all about the power of social media, and now I'd like to share a case-study in progress.

My client Keith Livingston (www.keithlivingstondesign.com) is a sculptor who specializes in selling unique sterling silver jewelry. Currently we are promoting his line of heart designs and we've been brainstorming on the best way to reach his target audience.
Enter Facebook. We set up an ad campaign that featured his design "Your Heart Next to Mine" and launched it tonight at about 6:00pm. By 7:00pm we had over 16 click throughs. While we can't yet report any sales - that type of result is amazing.

So if you have a product that relies heavily on making a personal connection with your customer, ask me about starting a campaign in Facebook. You'll be pleased with the results.
Look for more reports on my results with Keith and other clients - have a great week.
